London is an expensive city. You should be prepared to pay for transport, food, telephone calls, stationery, social activities.
If you arrive for less then 14 weeks your transport expenses can be £20-£30 a week, students on longer courses are entitled to a 30% discount and apply for an Oyster card.
Food expenses can vary starting from £40 per week in a self-catering type of accommodation. It is possible to have lunch for £5 in a café or a coffee shop. A meal in a restaurant will cost approximately £10–£15.
Usually students pay for their accommodation in advance but it covers only the first 4 weeks, so you should be prepared to pay for your stay according to your choice (you may find more information in accommodation section).
Cinema tickets are about £7, theatre tickets – from £25, but students get discounts.
There are lots of museums which are free, such as National Gallery, British Museum, Tate Gallery, Greenwich Maritime Museum, Natural History Museum, etc., but other places have an admission fee varying from £7 to £17, (e.g. the admission fee to the Tower of London is £16.50 for adults and £ 9.50 for children under 15). |
